Capoeira Brasil's History

Capoeira Brasil Founders Grupo Capoeira Brasil has its roots from Grupo Senzala and was founded on January 14th, 1989 in Rio de Janeiro by Mestres Paulinho Sabiá (Niteroi - RJ), Boneco (Barra - RJ) and Paulão (Fortaleza - CE). Grupo Capoeria Brasil’s inauguration was sponsored by legendary masters of capoeira called padrinhos (godfathers) including: Mestre Suassuna, Itapoan, Peixinho, and Eziquiel.

Grupo Capoeira Brasil has not only grown nationally, with academies all over Brasil, but also internationally. We have many academies with great Masters, Teachers and Instructors in many continents like South America, Central America, North America, Western and Eastern Europe, Australia and Asia. Grupo Capoeira Brasil is recognized as one of the largest Capoeira group in the world and well respected amongst other famous groups and Grand Masters of Capoeira.

Mestres Boneco (Rio/Los Angeles), Paulinho Sabiá (Niteroi/Paris) and Paulão (Ceara/Amsterdam) compliment Grupo Capoeira Brasil in their own unique ways with numerous graduated students. While there are many important masters in Grupo Capoeira Brasil, these four masters are essential to the cultivation and evolution of the group’s work.

Capoeira Brasil Logo Grupo Capoeira Brasil has an objective to promote Capoeira in Brazil and throughout the World, contributing to a better understanding the cultural of Brazil. Grupo Capoeira Brasil also promotes a cultivating environment which Mestres of Capoeira can exchange information and experience with professors, instructors and capoeiristas in general. Embedded in this exchange of information is a philosophy of life and experience that contributes to a special cultural formation of people within a community. Grupo Capoeria Brasil also intends to transmit the opportunity for everyone to learn Capoeira, without discrimination of race, sex, or social class.
