Mathuzalem de Melo Jr., a.k.a. Tuzinho began Capoeira in 1997 in his home country of Brazil. After moving to NYC in 2001, Tuzinho founded Grupo Capoeira Brasil NYC, along with Instrutora Coruja, in 2005.

Tuzinho has performed and given workshops throughout the U.S. and Brazil. For the past several years, he has been invited to teach workshops at cultural events such as International Capoeira Encounter at Mestre Boneco’s world-renown capoeira center in Los Angeles. He has appeared on the Manhattan Neighborhood Network, featured in Ben Macklin ft. Tiger Lily - Feel Together, Caipirinha - Jinga Boogie and performed at the center for Integrative Nutrition, the Guggenheim and Metropolitan Arts Museums, for Calvin Klein and in front of Congress in Washington, D.C. with Mestre Boneco's G.I.N.G.A. (Gang Intervention Nationwide Guiding Adolescence).

Throughout his career, he has made it his responsibility to offer instruction to socially disadvantaged and low-income students across New York City. He has offered classes in Brownsville, Flatbush, Sunset Park, Bedford Stuyvesant and in East New York. In 2006, Tuzinho founded the first branch of Capoeira Brasil in Ohio where he now has several thriving academies, including one in the Oakley Community Center.

Indeed, Tuzinho’s ability to train, coach, and give guidance to students of all ages is remarkable. He believes in training consistently and with passion, remaining humble at all times, and respecting the masters of Capoeira. He urges students to stay true to the roots of Capoeira and to follow the guidance of the great masters that have come before them.
